Partington – Modern technology in road wheels

Wheels are one of the most important components of a bicycle, affecting riding comfort, aerodynamics, stiffness, and overall performance. AlthoughPartingtonis a relatively new brand on the market, it has quickly gained recognition thanks to its innovative approach to design and production. In this article, I take a look at what makes Partington stand out, discuss the key technical features of their wheels, and share my impressions from testing them in Tenerife. Find out why Partington has the potential to revolutionize the industry.

Partington's history and vision

The brand was founded by Jon Partington, an engineer with experience in the aviation industry, which translates into an extremely precise and innovative approach to the design process. Ben's vision is based on three pillars:precision, reliability, and continuous development. Thanks to advanced technologies and modern materials, Partington focuses on creating wheels that not only meet the expectations of the most demanding cyclists, but also exceed them.

The company's philosophy is that high-end bicycle components must combinelow weight, durability, and aerodynamics. This makes it possible to maintain the perfect balance between performance and riding comfort, whether you're racing in a demanding mountain race or clocking up the miles on flat routes.

Partington wheel technology and characteristics

Partington's range includes two distinctive models:

  1. Partington MKII R39/44
    • Different cone heights: 39 mm on the front wheel and 44 mm on the rear wheel
    • Weight of the set: approx. 1176 g
    • CeramicSpeed bearings
    • Carbon spokes and hub shell
    • Application: universal – suitable for both mountainous and flat terrain
    • Main advantages: excellent aerodynamics while maintaining low weight, high rigidity, and versatility
  2. Partington MKII R31/31
    • Lower rim cone
    • Designed for mountain bikers and those seeking maximum comfort
    • CeramicSpeed bearings
    • Carbon spokes and hub shell
    • Application: great in demanding terrain, where not only weight but also stability and handling reliability are important

Price: PLN 32,999 / €7,500 — yes, it's quite a splurge, but in return you get the pinnacle of engineering precision and innovation.

Both models feature the highest quality materials and precision manufacturing processes – all to ensure the optimal balance between low weight and durability.

Partington wheels are characterized by exceptionally high lateral stiffness (approximately 55 N/mm),which translates into effective power transfer and precise cornering. According to Jon Partington, the key to success is the perfect combination of aerodynamics, stiffness, and riding comfort – this makes riding not only fast but also enjoyable.

Assembling spokes to hubs – what is the secret?

In traditional road wheels, spokes are attached to the hub by passing them through holes in the flange (the side part of the hub) and lacing them in a specific pattern (e.g., cross x2, x3, or radial). The spokes are then connected to the rim using nipples, which allow the tension of each spoke to be adjusted. This method is quite universal and is used by most manufacturers.

However, Partingtonintroduces a number of innovations here.

  • Instead of standard holes in the flange, the brand relies heavily onadvanced composite materials, in which the spokes aredirectlyconnected to the hub and rim during the manufacturing process.

  • Thisco-molding systemmeans that the spokes are permanently integrated into the wheel structure, rather than relying on traditional nipples and standard threads.

  • The result?Perfectly matched tensionfor each spoke and no need for adjustment during use. Manufacturers such as Partington ensure that factory precision assembly and the use of carbon fiber result inan exceptionally light, stiff, and durable construction.
COMPOSITE WHEEL SYSTEM A high-performance wheel is a system of components that have been designed as a coherent whole, maximally integrated and optimized for cooperation. Partington's proprietary manufacturing methods ensure an Integrated Wheel System, creating one of the most advanced and effective sets on the market.

Although in this configuration, any servicing (e.g., replacing a damaged spoke) can be more complicated than with traditional wheels, the benefits in terms ofbetter aerodynamics, low weight, and high rigidityoften outweigh this. That is why Partington and similar manufacturers focus on advanced assembly technologies, offeringwheels that are optimized for performance and riding comfort right from the design stage.

Key features:

Unique hub design:Partington hubs are designed to minimize friction and increase power transfer efficiency. Interestingly, the deliberately introduced play in the bearings eliminates additional tension and ensures a longer service life for the components.

Compatibility with wide tires:Partington wheels work perfectly with 25-30 mm wide tires, improving riding comfort on uneven surfaces.

Aerodynamics:The special rim profile reduces air resistance, even in crosswinds.

In traditional road wheels, standard bearing arrangements are often exposed to harmful loads related to usage conditions or mounting methods, which can lead to additional rolling resistance. Partington offers a "floating" bearing design that provides sufficient degrees of freedom to minimize and properly direct loads within the bearing. This keeps the wheels running smoothly and maintains their performance and durability at the highest level.

Crash Replacement:

Partington offers a wheel replacement program in the event of damage caused while driving. This is an important guarantee for users who are concerned about the risks associated with intensive use.

First impressions from driving – Tenerife

Day 1: Warm-up in mountainous terrain

I started my first day in Tenerife with a leisurely 70 km ride, including the obligatory stop for coffee and cake. The route led through a 12 km climb from the beach to San Miguel. The road was full of bumps, but the width of the tires (29 mm on Partington rims) effectively dampened any vibrations, which significantly improved riding comfort.

During the descent in rain and strong wind, the wheels remained extremely stable. With an average cone of 39/44, I did not feel any "pushing" off the track, which is a common problem with side winds. The ride was predictable and comfortable – I didn't have to fight with the bike and could focus on the descent.

Day 2: El Teide Volcano

The climb up El Teide is a real test for the wheels. The lightness of the set (1176 g) allowed me to smoothly cover the kilometers uphill. Despite the wind on the plateau, the wheels did not lose their stability. The descent towards Vilaflor was a real pleasure – the precision and confidence of the handling allowed me to ride fast in the corners.

Day 3: Slack on the hubs – does it work?

That day, I decided to focus on the play in the hubs. Despite initial concerns about friction and stability, everything worked perfectly in practice. The play did not adversely affect the ride, and at the same time, I felt that the bike rolled more smoothly.

Summary

Partington wheels are a true innovation in the world of cycling. Their lightness, aerodynamics, and precision make them the perfect choice for demanding cyclists looking for reliable equipment. Yes, the price is high, but in return you get a product that takes your riding to the next level.

If you are looking for modern technology and are willing to invest in quality, Partington should be on your shortlist. With a variety of models (from R35 to Aero), there is something for everyone, regardless of your preferred riding style.
